You can feel it in the air. Punxsutawney Phil emerges to see if he can catch his own shadow. And, like other varmints, artists and entertainers emerge to cast their own seasonal shadows on the cause de jure. Recording artists and entertainers are known for their art. They are extremely talented and intelligent individuals blessed with the ability to make us dance, laugh, cry, and even think about things we may have never considered. Still, as Phil’s fur feels the movement of the cold winter air, we too feel the movement of a somewhat hotter airflow emanating from the self-proclaimed saviors of society also known as recording artists. As a music creator, I felt this might be an appropriate time to reflect on the current wave of flatulent wisdom from some of my colleagues on high.
My opinion is based on my experience of what music is, and what it isn’t. It is also based on what artists are, and what they are not. My intent is not to disrespect my colleagues, but to challenge them with a healthy dose of reality and encouragement. I also wish to apologize to the general public on behalf of my fellow music creators, most of whom are very intelligent, caring and mostly humble people.
