Numerous environmental factors, including drugs taken by the mother during pregnancy, affect the sexual differentiation of the brain during prenatal development. Parents are sometimes stuck with making a difficult choice, when the infant is born, about assigning a gender, because of society's expectations, and this will not always match the gender identity of the child as he/she matures. Society really needs to catch up with the science on this front.
